SEARCH RESULTS CASE STUDY
Insight's goal for this project was to streamline not only the relevancy of the actual search results, but the overall experience as well. Historically, the search feature was less than visually appealing with components being unorganized, resulting in it being unclear on what the customer needed to do to complete their task.
Role: Lead UX/UI Designer / Project Lead
Project scope:

Phase 2 (UX/UI Acceptance testing and updates) 4 weeks

THE CHALLENGE.
Foster an optimal and user-centric search experience by ensuring the presentation of essential information at an elevated level. This approach empowers customers to make informed selections regarding products, facilitating a seamless progression throughout the entirety of their transactional journey, all without overly complicating the everyday search feature.
Search Results goals were:
Return relevant results in under 4 seconds.
Clearly display price and availability.
Display all technical product specifications needed to allow users to quickly find and purchase the desired product.
Sort available products above products that are out of stock.
Provide users with the ability to compare similar products.
THE DISCOVERY.
In order to fully grasp the scale of the Search Results project, we conducted user test sessions with customers across multiple personas and company sizes. The theme defined from these sessions indicated that the search feature was drastically failing.
98% of users (both internal & external) did not feel confident in the data being displayed in the results
More than half of the users were unable to find the product they were looking for without an exact part number.
Most users would contact their sales representative to create and place the order for them.
Additional research was done to define how often filters were being used, the expected time to return results, and if product stock counts swayed the customer transaction completion.
